Moving a long distance, such as across the country, is always going to be a big endeavor. However, it does not have to be an overwhelming disaster that leaves you exhausted. Here are a few tips to help simplify the experience and make it less burdensome.

1. Move in the spring or fall, if possible.

You may not have much say in when you move. For instance, your job may require you to be in town and working on July 1st. But if you are lucky enough to have some say in when you move, you absolutely should plan your move for either the spring or the fall. There is less demand for long-distance moving companies during these seasons, so you'll have more flexibility in scheduling. Plus, you won't have to worry as much about weather-related struggles such as snowstorms or heat waves.

2. Ask for and accept help.

This is not the time to be cavalier and to try to do it all yourself. Let others help you pack and move — whether that means relying on friends or hiring movers. Most long-distance moving companies offer a full-service option in which they will pack, load, transport, unload, and even unpack your things. This option is often worth the extra cost since it frees up so much more of your time. You can spend your time worrying about things only you can do — like adapting to your new job or signing real estate contracts.

3. Arrive early.

There's nothing more stressful than rolling into town the night before your new job begins. Everything is still packed, you're exhausted, and you're not even sure how to get from your new home to the office. Make sure you schedule the moving company to arrive at least two or three days before you need to start work so you have wiggle room and time to settle.

4. Pay for moving insurance.

The longer you're moving, the greater the chance of something going wrong along the way. Even the best drivers get into accidents occasionally, and a mover might drop something while carrying it into your house. Most long-distance moving companies include insurance in their contracts, but do check for this — and buy additional insurance if needed.

If you keep the tips above in mind, your long-distance move should be simpler and more manageable. Your moving company might also have some more specific advice.
