Are you planning to move a long distance for the very first time? Make sure to follow these tips so that the move goes smoothly.

Purge Your Belongings

It is always important to do a purge of your belongings before any time that you move, but it is even more important for a long-distance move. There is no option to make a second trip back to your hold home if something doesn't fit on the truck, and your long-distance movers typically will charge you by the weight of the items rather than how many hours it takes to pack things up. This means that every item that you purge is going to save you money and make the move go faster.

A good tip for purging your belongings is to sort things into one of four categories. Toss the item in the trash because it is worthless, recycle the item because the material has some value, donate items that are not worth much and are in good condition, and sell items that you don't want and have some value to them. Every bit helps contribute to less weight and more cash back in your pocket at the end of the move.

Pack In Advance

A common mistake people make is not packing far in advance. The packing process actually starts weeks before your moving date, since you should already be going through items to purge them. You should have many things packed well before your moving day comes, so you have time to properly pack items and have the boxes be labeled.

Pack Immediate Need Items Separate

It is very likely that your movers are going to pick up your belongings and that you will have a few days between when you see them again. This means that you need to pack up all of your immediately needed items separately. A good tip is to pack as if you were going on vacation for a week. Have your medications, toiletries, several sets of clothes, chargers, and anything else you'll need within that next week ready to go. You can even use your suitcase to keep these items separate and to make sure that you do not pack them leading up to your moving day.
